My intent in writing 3 ways prophets have hurt the church is not to pull anyone down or run an exposé, but to protect the body of Christ and the prophetic office itself. Obviously, not every prophet out there is abusive in nature or has hurt the church. I’m friends with several genuine prophets and they have added immensely to my life.

Forcing people into decisions.
Prophets have harmed the church by forcing believers to obey everything they say.
The culture of control is not from heaven, even an almighty God doesn’t resort to control. Anytime a prophet wants to exert pressure or control your decisions, it’s a sign they are manipulating you.

Prophets have used their anointing time and again to force decisions in other people’s lives. Not biblical!
A prophet should never forcefully decide whom you should or shouldn’t marry. This personal decision is one you make in consultation with your family, trusted friends and mature believers and ensuring that the Bible is the foundation of that conversation.
A prophet, if anything is allowed by God to affirm and confirm what God has already revealed to you or offer advise that is in line with scripture.
Do not allow a prophet to make business decisions for you. They are free to tell you what they believe is God’s will in the matter, but do not make your decision solely based on that.
Again, you have to hear from God yourself and make a decision based on your convictions and business aptitude.
It’s not a prophet’s place to force people to make decisions they don’t want to make.
Brokers of prosperity
Let me start by saying, I’m someone who believes in Biblical prosperity, the principles of sowing and reaping and extravagant generosity. However, the modern day prophets have twisted the message of biblical prosperity and stewardship by diluting the work of the cross into a “get rich, quick! Scheme”.
Nothing else can be further from the truth. I’m not against fund raising, I’m saying some of the methods employed are questionable, some of the practices used by them is pure extortion and abuse of power and influence.
Prophets have harmed the church by manipulating people to give money by exaggerating truth and by employing non-biblical methods.
Anytime a prophet demands money from you to pray for you, something is amiss. God is not running a lottery and prophets are not his brokers.

Culture of fear and judgement.
Prophets have harmed the church by creating an atmosphere of hate, fear and judgement.
Prophets ought to cause people to fall in love with God, not chase them away from God.
Sermons that are hateful, mean and void of hope are the worst shipments from these leaders. They don’t offer hope, love or forgiveness, just dread of an ominous future in hell.
The church is a place of hope, the worst of sinners have a place in the arms of Jesus. Who are we to deny them that opportunity?

It doesn’t stop there, this culture finds its way into marriages, families and even organizations. This must change, if we are destined to be light and salt to the world, let’s start by creating an atmosphere of hope in our churches and families.
